Delta Changes Have Arrived

by Shaun Sharp

Two years ago, at check-in, Delta’s app launched the choice to upgrade to Delta Comfort+ by seat type. You could basically opt out of a middle seat should it come available. I must have been sleeping at the wheel because for one my flights I had my preference set to get on the upgrade list for Comfort+ and First and Comfort+ cleared and I ended up in the middle. When you are Silver or Gold status and if you changed your preference like I did to avoid the potential middle seat (or thought I did), then you have to be on top of check-in to get on the Comfort+ list.

Fortunately, as a Platinum member unless I book a last-minute flight, I upgrade to Comfort+ at booking. Delta has finally made this all easier. It’s still a specific trip by trip setting but now at time of booking you can update your upgrade preferences to Comfort+ by actual seat type – window, middle, aisle.

How long is the shared ride away from my location? how is traffic tracking? how long will it take to drop the rental car and shuttle over to the terminal? how long will it take to get my bag checked? how long will I need to wait at security? how far is the walk to my gate? and when is the plane expected to board?

Luckily, I have done everything I can (minus the private helicopter ride) to position myself for the quickest and most efficient way in. I do my best to avoid rush hour flights and give myself plenty of time to take advantage of lounge access. Delta, however, is trying to help take the guess work out of some of this. Their new feature is not entirely new information as Security wait time information is available at some major airport’s websites, however, to make it more convenient they have built in the app a feature that allows you to see the Airport security wait times of your departure airport upon check-in. I will need to get back to you on the prevalence of the available information and its accuracy.
